Tips on How To Build and Raise A Wind Power Generator Tower by Kurt
Types of Wind Generators
Wind Turbines convert kinetic energy to mechanical energy. This converted energy, when utilized to produce electric power, it is termed a wind generator or wind charger. When it is made to make machinery move, then it is termed a windmill or wind pump.
There are three basic types: the towered Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT), the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) Savonius, and the VAWT Darrieus.
The distinction between HAWTs and VAWTs is the direction of the axis from which the blades rotate. The latter is more frequently used and has been around for a longer time. The particular characteristic of HAWTs is that they have the electric generator and rotor shaft located on top of their tower, and pointed to the wind. Wind vanes help point small wind turbines, while wind sensors with servo motors do it for larger turbines. A gearbox accelerates the blade's slow turning to a more suitable speed needed to power an electric generator.
The positioning of HAWTs are most commonly upwind relative to their towers, since towers create turbulence as wind passes through them. Blades are usually stiff in order to prevent being pushed into the tower. In addition, the placement of the blades is made at a considerable distance from the tower. Sometimes, they are tilted a small measure forward onto the direction of the wind.
Turbines pointed downwards have been constructed so that they would not need any additional mechanism to keep them in line with the direction of the wind. They are also capable of bending backward, to reduce the swept area and thus reduce wind resistance. Many HAWTs are designed upwind to avoid Fatigue (material) failures caused by repetitive turbulence.
Blades of commercial wind farms are usually three-bladed and have motors controlled by computers to point them to the wind. They usually employ a gear box to step up the generator speed. Models capable of variable speed can collect more energy compared to types that have constant speed.
VAWTs on the other hand, have vertically positioned main rotor shafts. This is advantageous in the sense that there is no need to point the turbine to the wind in order to collect energy. Thus, this kind of wind turbine is commonly used in places with highly variable wind directions, such as in sites with buildings. These kinds of sites usually have lower wind speeds.
As for disadvantages, their rotational speed is low, thus having a higher Torque and consequently a higher drive train. There is then a lower coefficient of power. With VAWTs, there is a higher difficulty in modeling the flow of the wind, and this adds challenge to the analysis and design of their rotor.
VAWTs, can have their gearbox and the generator located near ground level, giving better accessibility for repair and maintenance activities.
The Parallel turbine is a VAWT which is similar to a Crossflow_fan. The Darrieus wind turbine or the so-called eggbeater turbine are highly efficient but are not too reliable due to an inherent defect in design. The Giromill is a subtype of the Darrieus turbine, having straight instead of the Darrieus' curved blades. There is also a cycloturbine variety. Other types include twisted Savonius turbines.
Some unconventional wind turbines include turbines with an observation deck and airborne turbines. Ram turbines are attached to aircraft to give it power to essential systems in cases of engine or power failures. All these varied forms have their inherent advantages and disadvantages.
The Best in Alternators and PMA's Permanent Magnet Alternators for the DIY customer.
Introducing The MARK I, II, AND III line of generators available in out CAT 4 and 5 PMA's. The Mark I is the worlds most efficient generator at extracting energy from low winds. At Hurricane Wind Power we are not a one trick pony with one product attempting to convince the consumer that one size fits all. Unlike other companies we are not limited to using whatever stators or PMA's are available for import. This is why you will see many products on the market that do not reach charging voltage really high RPM that is rarely attained. It appears all they have to use for a stator is a machine wound heavy gauge wire stator meant to go in a car. The reason we are able to produce a superior product is our generators are produced by skilled craftsmen with a combined total of over 300 years experience. Our MARK II line of wind generators features a cut in speed with lower RPM needed to produce charging voltage than the majority of low wind PMA's on the market while producing more amperage. The MARK III is made for those few areas of the world that have high wind on an regular basis. If you live in Wind Zone 6-7 our MARK III generator will provide the high amperage solution you are looking for. Our PMA's are thus customized to the consumers need and our complete kits are available with your choice of generator, just specify when ordering.
I am proud to say that our Hurricane Line of generators is made by Americans who take pride in what they do which is to make the best generator on the planet. Do not be fooled by other vendors who put made in USA labels on their products. Almost all of them use a mass produced machine wound Chinese stator and imported magnets for their PMA's, just ask them where they are made. Our stators are hand wound by craftsmen and our products are engineered, sourced and assembled in the USA by talented men and women who take pride in their work. This I submit to you is a true made in the USA product from Hurricane Wind Power where the spirit that made this country great is being rebourne.
Today their are many who claim to build the best PMA. They say their brand is the best for every wind area on the map. This is just not reality as one tool is not often the be all end all product for every application. This is why we have a full line of wind power products. We update our catalogue with newer and advanced products all the time. Whether it be on grid or off, battery charging or direct connect, we carry a full line of the best wind power products available. We proudly stand behind our Hurricane and soon "Louisville" products in a power output comparison with any company. We have tested our products against every major brand. I can say without a doubt no one beats a Hurricane. We have the best low RPM wind generator for extracting energy out of light wind. Hurricane Wind Power is your one stop alternative energy store. In is our mission to bring clarity and focus to the confusing world of green energy for our customers. Here you will find resource materials articles and tips for completing your wind power projects. We are adding tools, calculators and charts to help our customers. Our inventory is updated with new developments almost daily so check back often.
When we advertise we have the best wind power generators on the market we mean our category 3,4 and 5 wind generators are made out of all new parts and made in the USA. They are built in Louisville KY, Houston TX, Cincinnati OH, Atlanta GA and Roanoke VA. Our engineers and staff have over 100 years combined experience. Our products will last longer and reach charging set points in lower wind than our competitors. Over time we generate more power than our competitors turbines. We are thus the "best" choice and first in wind generator building .
